Unravelling the mindset of Pseudo liberals

                 The notion of liberals is different for different regions and nations. “Pseudo” is a prefix that means "not genuine" or "sham" . And “Liberal” is a person who is willing to respect or accept behavior or opinions different from one's own and is open to new ideas. 

                  But unfortunately in our country we have a unique breed of individuals called 'pseudo-liberal' It refers to people who claim to be liberal but are not “true” practitioners of liberal ideology. 

                 From whatever I have gathered a typical pseudo liberal is one who in general is highly educated from a university of international repute, highly placed in the socioeconomic strata of the society and most of whom are unemployed or on the verge of unemployment due their defunct leftist ideology and trying to prove something to the world by writing a stupid book which has no takers.

                In our country 'Liberal' is a term used for an elite class, whom you would regularly find in some classy five star hotel ,sipping and enjoying his or her nice glass of wine or single malt amidst the glitz and glamour . They claim to be advanced, progressive, forward-looking but one would rarely find them speaking out against Islamic fanatics or their diktats that goes against gender equality, yet they whine about gender equality each day. 


               They would endlessly write articles, columns or even books about Godhra riots, but never touch on how Islamic fundamentalists burnt the Sabarmati express with 58 Hindu pilgrims or karsevaks returning from Ayodhya. For them it’s a pride to organize an event portraying terrorist Afzal Guru as a martyr even though all kinds of legal proceedings were used before execution. but for them it amounts to freedom of expression and not contempt of court. How can anyone forget Burhan Wani who was dubbed as son of a poor head master rather than a dreaded terrorist. 


               Issues like uniform civil code or the issue of triple talaq which is even banned in many Muslim majority counties, are never discussed by them. Our ‘liberals’ argue that it would destroy the secular fabric of our country. Bigoted ilk hide behind the secular garb whenever challenged.


               Two more incidents like usage of slogan "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and standing up for national anthem created lots of furore amongst these individuals. Even Hindu festivals are often criticized and considered regressive.Again for them Jallikutti is cruelty to animals but mass slaughter that takes places during bakrid is not so.
               These pseudo Liberals are fond of disparaging the Right Wing or the nationalist. In this blog I didn’t want to name anyone but the pseudo secular like Nayantara Sehgal in an event says “nationalism is a piece of nonsense” OH! Really. 


                My idea of a true liberal is the one who knows how to retain the true essence of both Liberalism and Nationalism. A true Liberal should strongly oppose any inhumane act whether it is done by a Hindu or a Muslim Fundamentalist organization. Any form of appeasement that trespasses justice/ equality, whether it be of Majority or Minority, should be strictly opposed. Baselessly supporting the Left Wing does not make you a "Liberal". Someone who uses a term 'Liberal' only to justify his hypocrisy is undoubtedly a Pseudo Liberal.
